Illegal foreigner tries committing suicide after immigration officer treated him “like an animal”

A foreign national who is seeking asylum in South Africa tried taking his own life after being treated “like an animal” by an immigration officer.

The media reports that conduct of immigration officer Annelise van Dyk in handling the case of Ethiopian citizen Tsegaye Esyas has sparked outrage and condemnation.

According to judges James Lekhuleni and Patricia Goliath, her actions were “repugnant” and went against the principles expected of a person in her position. Van Dyk’s behavior led to Esyas attempting to take his own life after he was tricked into confessing he was in South Africa illegally.

This deplorable conduct has caused a miscarriage of justice and calls into question the fairness of the legal system in immigration cases.

Esyas, a non-English speaking Ethiopian citizen, sought asylum in South Africa due to political unrest in his home country.

He faced numerous obstacles in obtaining the necessary documentation and was eventually arrested alongside his employer.

The confusion and lack of proper interpretation services led to his admission of guilt and the payment of a fine, which he believed was for bail.

It was only later revealed that the money was an admission of guilt fine, and Van Dyk could now keep him in custody pending deportation.

The judges ordered that the admission of guilt fine be set aside, and Esyas be refunded the amount paid.
