Hugo Broos On why Bafana Plays Less Competitive Nations

Hugo Broos, the coach of Bafana Bafana, warns against underestimating the path he is pursuing by taking on teams that are viewed as being less competitive.

The two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification matches against Liberia that will take place in March of next year, according to Broos, are what is most crucial at this point.

Bafana has won its past three international games, defeating Botswana 1-0 and Sierra Leone 4-0, both during September break.

Hugo Broos believes that these countries will provide him with the best preparations for the AFCON qualifiers against Liberia the following year.

In a news conference, Broos stated, “The opponents, I think I said it before a few months ago, we will now choose opponents of less level than France, than Morocco, and than Ghana.”

Bafana lost to Ghana in a World Cup qualifying match in questionable circumstances in November of last year, and they were humiliated 5-0 by France in a friendly match in March. They suffered a 2-1 defeat to Morocco in the first group stage AFCON qualifier in June.

“We played against these teams, and we struggled, especially against France. I’ve said it before but playing against teams like Ghana, who will be in the World Cup, Morocco, who will be at the World Cup, and France, who will be defending their title, was unfair. It was unfair that we lost in Ghana when we could have defeated Ghana.

Broos previously stated that he wants Bafana to compete against top nations, but he has learned a hard lesson from those games, with France serving as the best illustration by thrashing Bafana.

We’ll play against opponents who are good but not the best, and we’ll try to win, I changed my mind and said, “Okay,” he continued.

“Winning was crucial because it gives you confidence. So, this is how I’ve tried to work over the last few months, and I believe we’ve succeeded, and this team is winning.
