Former Sundowns striker Mailula warms the MLS bench again

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula found himself once again on the bench as an unused substitute for Toronto FC in their recent 2-0 victory over Atlanta United in the MLS on Sunday.

Since his arrival at the club ahead of the 2023 season, Mailula has seen limited playing time, having only featured for just over an hour in first-team action.

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has expressed concerns about Mailula’s lack of game time at Toronto, highlighting that the striker is significantly behind other players in the pecking order.

Broos openly questioned the wisdom of Mailula’s move to Toronto, emphasizing the importance of regular playing opportunities for a player’s development and form.

Toronto FC head coach John Herdman echoed Broos’ sentiments in a recent interview, acknowledging the competition for places in the attacking positions.

Herdman pointed out the presence of seasoned players like Lorenzo Insigne, Federico Bernardeschi, and Jonatha Osorio in what he described as “magician-type positions,” indicating that Mailula will have to bide his time and wait for his chance to make an impact on the field.

In response to the situation, Mailula remains determined and focused on proving himself at Toronto FC.

Despite the challenges he faces in securing a spot in the starting lineup, Mailula is committed to working hard in training and making the most of any opportunities that come his way.
