Former Ivorian footballer who retired aged 28 plots Nigerian downfall
Former Ivory Coast footballer Fae had to retire from the sport at the age of 28 due to vein inflammation issues in his legs.
Despite this setback, Fae was a key player for the Ivorian side that finished as runners-up in the 2006 Nations Cup, playing every minute of the tournament.
Now, Fae has taken on a different role and will be guiding the Ivorian team as their coach in the upcoming Nations Cup final.
The team has reached the final four times before but has never managed to score a goal, with all previous matches ending in goalless draws and going to penalties.
Fae aims to change that and ensure that the two-time champions finally score in the final.
The Ivorian team has been successful in the tournament so far, with all six of their goals being scored by different players.
Fae will be relying on Sebastien Haller, who recently returned from an ankle injury and scored the winning goal in the semi-final, to continue his impressive performance in the final.
Fae himself has faced numerous challenges in his personal and professional life.
He battled testicular cancer and returned to football just over a year ago.
Despite the pressure as a striker and the responsibility that comes with it, Fae is motivated to perform well in front of their home crowd.
In the semi-finals, the team had to cope without four suspended players.
However, for the final, Fae will have the luxury of selecting from a near full-strength squad.
He is prepared for any eventuality that the unpredictable Nations Cup may have in store.
