Five ruthless killers get arrested
A multidisciplinary team quickly located and arrested five men. They are suspected of being linked to the killing of nine people and the injury of another in three separate shooting incidents. These happened in Kwanobuhle and Uitenhage on Thursday, 13 October 2022.
In the first incident, the bodies of four people are said to have been discovered inside a Mazda 323 at around 11:45, and a fifth body is said to have been discovered in Mabi Street behind the car. The Sixth male injured was taken to the hospital. All of the victims—both those who died and those who were hurt—had multiple gunshot wounds.
In the second incident, the bodies of three people were discovered on Zolanqini Street at around 12:10.
Three bodies were discovered—two inside a silver VW Polo and one laying outside the car. They were all physically wounded by several gunshots.
Lt Gen Mene gave the order to initiate the 72-hour activation plan as soon as the murders were reported. Within this time range, on Friday, 14 October 2022, at about 8:00 am, four males who were persons of interest were taken into custody to be questioned. The individuals, who were between the ages of 26 and 30, were discovered at a potential hiding place near Summerstrand.
Further evidence showed that another male body, this one between the ages of 18 and 25, was discovered on the side of the road at Rooihoogte, close to Kwanobuhle, on the same day as the killings.
The team’s findings during the investigations led them to believe that a white Toyota Quantum bakkie was likely responsible for the killings. Police searched for this vehicle nonstop, and on October 14, 2022, at about 18:10, they finally found it as it was making its way into town from the Langa site in Uitenhage. In Van Riebeeck Hoogte, the car was halted, and a 34-year-old man was taken into custody. The Quantum was taken away.
The three murder scenes are linked. All five suspects are charged with nine cases of murder and one of attempted murder. They will appear in the Kwanobuhle magistrate court on Monday 17 October 2022.
