Drugs worth R37 million seized at OR Tambo airport were hidden inside artwork
Alert officials at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa made a significant drug seizure last week, intercepting 23kg of narcotics disguised as moulded artwork.
The drugs, with an estimated street value of R37m, were found in a box destined for New Zealand during a routine inspection at the cargo sheds.
The officers became suspicious of the moulded artwork and conducted a narcotics test, which confirmed the presence of crystal meth weighing 10kg.
Further tests by the police revealed an additional 13kg of fentanyl.
The seized narcotics have been handed over to the police for further investigation. Sars commissioner Edward Kieswetter commended the vigilance of the customs officers and reiterated the agency’s commitment to combating the illegal drug trade.
He emphasized the devastating impact that drugs have on families and communities, particularly the youth, and vowed that Sars Customs would spare no effort in preventing the export or import of narcotics and illegal substances.
This seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to disrupt and dismantle drug trafficking networks.
Drug smugglers are constantly finding new ways to conceal their illicit goods, and customs officers play a crucial role in identifying and intercepting these shipments.
The use of disguises, such as moulded artwork in this case, demonstrates the lengths to which criminals will go to evade detection.
