“Dont destroy yourself with one Zuma gig” – Fikile Mbalula warns prodigal ANC son Papa Penny
Social media platforms are abuzz with the African National Congress’s (ANC) attempts to prevent Papa Penny, real name Eric Kulani Giyani Nkovani, from performing at the Umkhonto Wesizwe’s (MKP) event.
The event, scheduled for the 18th of this month at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium, promises to be significant, not least because of the ANC’s intervention.
Reports circulated that Papa Penny, the Limpopo-born singer, had abandoned the ANC in favour of joining the recently formed MKP.
In an interview with local news outlet ZiMoja, the artist confirmed his new allegiance but reserved further comments until receiving permission from his new party’s leadership.
Screenshots of conversations between Papa Penny and key ANC figures Paul Mashatile and Fikile Mbalula have emerged on MKP’s social media platform.
The messages reveal the singer’s dissatisfaction with his treatment by the ANC, leading to his decision to break away.
Mashatile’s response to Papa Penny’s departure was conciliatory, expressing his firm belief that the issue could be resolved and suggesting a possible meeting back home.
However, Mbalula had a different approach, directly urging Papa Penny not to perform at former president Jacob Zuma’s MKP event.
Fikile then told Papa Penny that he was busy before saying, “Don’t destroy yourself with one Zuma gig.”
