Could Kaizer Chiefs turn to the “dark arts” to stop Sundowns from finishing the season unbeaten?

Arsenal turned to God and the dark arts to keep their title hopes alive during a thrilling victory in the north London derby.

Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, admitted that he resorted to prayer in the final moments of his side’s breathless win at Tottenham, as his team teetered on the brink of throwing away a three-goal lead.

Dark arts are basically the dirty little tricks outside of the football rule book used by players to try and win the match, while avoiding detection from the officials.

Back to South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs chances of beating Sundowns are next to none. Unless they employ the dark arts.

Chiefs forward Pule Mmodi has often been perceived as Amakhosi’s master of the dark arts.

He has expressed unwavering confidence in his team’s ability to derail Mamelodi Sundowns’ remarkable unbeaten run in the DStv Premiership.

The two South African giants are set to clash at FNB Stadium on Thursday evening in a highly anticipated encounter with significant implications for both sides.

Sundowns, under the guidance of Rulani Mokwena, are on the verge of securing their seventh consecutive league title. A victory against Chiefs would not only seal the championship with six games to spare but also keep them on track for an unprecedented ‘invincible’ season.

The Tshwane giants have been unstoppable thus far, remaining undefeated in their 23 league matches with an impressive record of 18 wins and 5 draws.

Despite Sundowns’ dominance, Mmodi believes Chiefs are well-positioned to challenge their rivals.

The recent 2-1 victory over SuperSport United, only their second win of the year, has injected a much-needed boost of confidence into the Amakhosi camp.

“I think the mood was good .. coming from a win against SuperSport and I think we are motivated to play Sundowns,” Mmodi stated.

Mmodi acknowledged Sundowns’ impressive record but remained undeterred, emphasizing Chiefs’ determination to disrupt their rivals’ title aspirations.

“They have the best record in the league and we are willing to destroy that history,” he declared.

“I think the only way to beat them is to all give our best on Thursday, so that we can get the three points … we need the points to stay in the top eight.”

Chiefs are currently locked in a tight battle for a top-eight finish, which would secure their participation in next season’s MTN8 competition. Mmodi attributed Chiefs’ struggles this season to a lack of clinical finishing rather than a deficiency in talent or ability.

“The players we have now, I still believe in them. There is nothing I can say we lack … the only problem was about scoring,” he admitted.
