Controversial Umhlobo Wenene presenter was found unconscious
Veteran radio broadcaster Mthobeli ‘KCI’ August passed away at his home in Johannesburg on Friday.
His family confirmed his death and stated that he was found unconscious.
In a statement, the family described Mthobeli as a decorated radio presenter who captivated audiences across South Africa with his unique presenting style.
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time and will announce funeral arrangements soon. Despite his popularity, KCI was no stranger to controversy.
He faced suspension and eventual dismissal from Umhlobo Wenene FM due to his violation of the station’s music policy and a dispute with the management.
He later returned to the station, albeit in a less prominent role, after alleged issues with listenership and co-host Luyanda Gidane.
In a 2016 interview with Drum Magazine, KCI acknowledged the difficulties he had faced but expressed his contentment with life.
He stated, “I’m single and I’m just enjoying life. Even if I was to die right now, I would die a happy man.”
However, controversy resurfaced in 2021 when he failed to appear at a wedding in East London.
KCI assured Drum Magazine that he was willing to reimburse the money.
Following the news of his passing, social media platforms were flooded with tributes to KCI, highlighting his larger-than-life personality and infectious spirit.
Many remembered him as a fearless and principled broadcaster who left an indelible mark on the industry.
