Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung talks about PSL succession plan

Kaizer Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung says the Premier Soccer League (PSL) needs to start planning for the future leadership of the League, with younger people taking over when the current leaders step down.

The 80-year-old Motaung was speaking at the PSL’s general meeting in Sandton this week, where he was once again elected to the League’s new executive committee.

Motaung was elected alongside Irvin Khoza, Mato Madlala, Stan Matthews, Tim Sukazi, Rejoice Simelane, Jomo Biyela, and Johnny Mokgaladi. Khoza was re-elected unopposed as chairman of the League for another four-year term.

“We have to be open to the young ones to take over because our time will come to an end,” Motaung said when asked about the PSL’s succession plan.

“There has to be a proper plan in place, something we can do together as a committee, to make sure we set things up properly for the future.”

Motaung, who was gifted R2 million by Khoza to “spoil himself”, also reflected on his long partnership with the PSL chairman.

“We’ve been through a lot together in this league. We worked as a team, even when he wasn’t chairman of Pirates.

He supported us when we fought against SANFA (the South African National Football Association), who wanted to control both amateur and professional football,” Motaung said.

“Our journey with the chairman has been eye-opening and full of challenges.

It’s taken time to build things, but we’re proud of our own history. We’ve written it ourselves, not waiting for anyone else to do it,” he concluded.
