Another country lifts travel ban on EFF’s Julius Malema
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have welcomed the decision by Zambia to lift Julius Malema’s seven-year travel ban, following a similar move by Botswana.
Malema, leader of the EFF, is now free to travel to Zambia after President Hakainde Hichilema lifted the ban, which had been imposed by former president Edgar Lungu in 2017. The ban was a result of Malema’s support for Hichilema, who was then the opposition leader.
The EFF praised President Hichilema’s decision, calling it a positive step for unity and progress in Africa.
The party said, “With the lifting of this ban, Hichilema has demonstrated his commitment to the ideals of democracy and progress, distancing Zambia from the dictatorial practices of the past.”
They also expressed their gratitude, adding, “The EFF extends its gratitude to president Hichilema and reaffirms its commitment to building a united and progressive Africa.”
Last week, Malema’s travel ban in Botswana was also lifted ahead of the inauguration of the country’s new president, Duma Boko, leader of the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition.
Malema had been banned from Botswana in 2011 after he threatened to “overthrow” then-President Ian Khama’s government, leading to a diplomatic row. Malema’s comments, made in his role as ANC Youth League leader, were seen as an attempt to incite a coup, resulting in his expulsion from the ANC later that year.
