Digging deeper into the insurance policy murderer

A 49-year-old woman was denied bail by the Mmabatho Magistrates Court in the North West on Friday, November 17. She was arrested on suspicion of killing her niece in order to make a false claim on a life insurance policy.

Charges against 49-year-old Agnes Segomotsi Setshwantsho include murder, two charges of fraud, and undermining the administration of justice. On Thursday, November 16, in Pretoria, she was Arrested after a two-month police investigation.

Sergeant Keshi Mabunda, who is renowned for having solved a case involving insurance payouts connected to notorious killer Rosemary Ndlovu, oversaw the investigation.

Entering the courtroom, Setshwantsho told Magistrate Duane Spandiel that she was being accused of killing her 30-year-old niece, Bonolo Modiseemang, according to the police. She further claimed that she did not kill anyone.

Outside the court, Bonolo’s mother, Brenda Matolo, was crying. She said that her daughter passed away in August 2022 after eating a sandwich which was given to her by Setshwantso

“The very same Segomotsi took my daughter to the local doctor after she started vomiting and having heavy diarrhea. She died about an hour after eating the sandwich,” she said.

Matolo said that despite knowing that their daughter had died after eating the sandwich that Setswantsho had allegedly given her, they had no suspicions from the start.

“It was only a week later when the insurance officials came to our home and informed us that our daughter was insured for R1 million. That’s when we became suspicious because we had no idea Setswantsho had insured her,” she said.

It was discovered that Bonolo was poisoned and did not pass away naturally, according to Matolo, who stated that three weeks ago they had to go and exhume her daughter remains.

“It’s heartbreaking because she’s leaving behind two young children, aged 10 and seven. How am I supposed to tell them their mother was murdered by her aunt?” she said.

Matolo went on to say that they discovered Setswantsho had insured Bonolo’s younger sister for R2 million through the insurance policies.

The accused’s late husband’s elder brother, Itireleng Setswantsho, was also in court.

He added that the family learned of his brother’s marriage after they had already tied the knot, therefore he did not find it surprising that Setswantsho was accused of such things.

He claimed that three of his children had passed away unexpectedly, and that his brother had died strangely in 2006.

“Segomotsi has been abusing us. At one point she accused my mother of witchcraft. My mother was unable to attend this court case because it was too painful for all of us. We’d also like to find out what killed my brother and his three children,” he said.

According to the Daily Sun Setshwantsho ‘s lawyer Nhlanhla Mahlangu told the court that his client has a previous pending case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The case was postponed to November 24 for further investigations.
