Eyewitness describes rescue efforts after PSL star Mogaila’s fatal crash

Premier Soccer League (PSL) player Shaune Mogaila crashed his black BMW into a red Hyundai i10, resulting in the death of a nine-year-old girl.

The red Hyundai was driven by a woman taking her two children, aged nine and 13, to school.

The nine-year-old girl died at the scene, while the woman and the 13-year-old were taken to Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital with injuries.

Mogaila turned himself in to the police on Wednesday afternoon after leaving the crash site.

When Sunday World visited the scene on Thursday, the long skid marks on Andrew Mapheto Drive indicated that he had tried to stop his car.

An eyewitness from nearby Phomolong, Simphiwe Mogorosi, 19, saw the BMW speeding in the opposite lane before crashing into the Hyundai.

Mogorosi said there was no sign of Mogaila when he arrived. Community members quickly came to help those injured in the crash.

He described the scene, saying the woman was in the driver’s seat with her face against the airbag. She had cuts from broken glass and a bloody shirt.

“The little girl was trapped under the driver’s seat and bleeding from the head. The boy had managed to get out of the car and was bleeding from a head injury,” Mogorosi recounted.

Community members successfully helped rescue the woman and children before the Ekurhuleni metro police and paramedics arrived.

Mogorosi mentioned that a white substance was coming from the nine-year-old’s nose and mouth while she was being treated.

“She died shortly after, and the paramedics covered her with silver foil,” he said.

Gauteng police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the soccer player turned himself in on Wednesday and will face charges of culpable homicide.

He was expected to appear in Tembisa magistrate’s court on Thursday but did not show up.

State prosecutor Maxwell Randima stated that the case was not ready for court and that the suspect would appear on Friday.

EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato also confirmed the incident, stating that the crash occurred at 7.30am on Andrew Mapheto Drive.

“It is alleged that a 29-year-old driver, who is reportedly a soccer player, fled the scene after the collision,” Makgato said.

“When the Ekurhuleni Metro Police arrived, they found four bottles of strong alcohol, a substance believed to be cocaine, and weed edibles in his vehicle.”

Makgato added that charges of culpable homicide, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident have been filed.
