Trevor Noah talks mental health and leaving ‘The Daily Show’
Trevor Noah has opened up about his life, discussing why men struggle with mental health, the death threats he received while on “The Daily Show,” and his decision to leave the show.
In a recent episode of Steven Bartlett’s “The Diary of A CEO” podcast, the comedian admitted that while he sought a challenge, it turned out to be much harder than he expected.
“It was terrible. You know when they say ‘be careful of what you wish for’? It was a challenge, and it was absolutely terrible because I realised the role was more than just a job,” Noah said about his time on “The Daily Show.”
When asked if race played a role, he responded, “Me being a different colour from Jon Stewart probably made some people feel I was more different when I sat at the desk.”
Noah shared that he received threats via email and comments telling him to go back to where he came from, along with racial slurs.
“I would sit there thinking, wow, you really hate me, and I’ve done nothing to you.
But then I realised you hate the idea of me and what I represent in your world,” he said about the death threats.
Despite the mental strain the show put on him, Noah expressed gratitude for the experience.
“I learned so much on ‘The Daily Show’, and I’m eternally grateful. There were many reasons for leaving, but I felt it was time.”
He also discussed men’s mental health, noting that many men struggle because of a limited view of what they can express.
“The sad truth is that a lot of guys have punished other guys for being vulnerable and for being themselves,” he said.
Noah added that while race is a factor, it’s not the only reason for the challenges he faced.
