EFF accuse Minister McKenzie of misusing taxpayer funds
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have reported the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, to the registrar for the Ethics and Members Interests Committee.
They claim he misused taxpayer money during his trip to the Olympic Games in Paris, France. McKenzie announced on Wednesday that R804,590.71 was spent on the trip.
This included R454,005 for ground transport, R215,976.36 for flights, and R113,271 for accommodation, with the rest going to insurance and other expenses.
Leigh-Ann Mathys, the EFF’s national spokesperson, said they also reported McKenzie for dishonesty.
He contradicted a previous statement he made in parliament, where he allegedly denied attending the Olympic Games, according to Mathys.
She stated that McKenzie has not paid enough attention to his department’s work.
Mathys insists that McKenzie’s desire for public approval, made acknowledge attending the Olympics and linked himself to wasteful spending.
Mathys believes all members of parliament and the executive should act selflessly and demonstrate integrity, honesty, and leadership.
She strongly feels that McKenzie violated the principles of the Code of Ethical Conduct by misusing taxpayer funds for excessive travel and accommodation costs in Paris.
The EFF also accused him of breaching ethical codes outlined in Section 5, which include upholding the oath taken by members.
“Through his actions, Gayton McKenzie has not only broken the Code of Ethical Conduct but also the Ministerial Handbook. This guides members of the executive on how to use public funds, especially regarding international travel,” Mathys said.
