Nedbank Cup stays with Orlando Pirates after victory over Mamelodi Sundowns

The Orlando Pirates clinched victory in the Nedbank Cup final for the second time this season, maintaining their hold on the trophy from last season.

This win marks their second triumph over the DStv Premiership champions in a cup final this year, following their earlier success in the MTN8 competition against Sundowns.

The game kicked off with Masandawana appearing more prepared, pressing aggressively in the opening exchanges. Despite winning a penalty in the ninth minute, Lucas Ribeiro failed to convert as Sipho Chaine, the Buccaneers’ goalkeeper, made a crucial save. The first half ended with the score level at 0-0.

Sundowns took the lead nine minutes into the second half through Themba Zwane. However, Pirates quickly equalized in the 71st minute with a penalty from Patrick Maswanganyi. The remainder of the game saw both teams vying for a decisive goal, with neither able to break the deadlock.

In the dying moments of extra time, 19-year-old Relebohile Mofokeng secured the victory for Pirates with a shot past Ronwen Williams.

This win marks their second title of the season and their second Nedbank Cup victory at Mbombela Stadium, having previously won in 2011.
