Malawian robber with a toy gun shot in the chest by an old man
A 27-year-old Malawian national was shot during a robbery at a General Dealer in Maidstone on Tuesday afternoon.
A 69-year-old resident of Tongaat, KZN, arrived at the store and witnessed three armed men robbing the premises. The old man drew his Tangfoglio 6.35 pistol and shot one of the men in the chest. The suspect dropped his firearm and fled with his accomplices. Cash and cellphones were stolen.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) arrived at the scene at approximately 17:17. Reaction Officers inspected the suspect’s firearm and determined that it was a replica.
After interviewing witnesses and the shooter, RUSA members proceeded to the Tongaat Clinic to check if any gunshot victims had been admitted.
Upon arrival, Officers were informed that a man with a gunshot wound to his chest had been left outside the medical facility by occupants of a white Ford Bantam bakkie, which had its registration plates removed. Security officers at the clinic helped the injured man inside.
Reaction Officers interviewed the man, who initially claimed to be a robbery victim. However, under further questioning, he admitted that he and three accomplices had conspired to rob the store. He did not provide any additional information.
Reaction Officers safeguarded the suspect until the arrival of the police.
