Popular DJ persuaded star to join Kaizer Chiefs from under Sundowns nose

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Valery Nahayo recently revealed the surprising influence behind his move to the Amakhosi, recounting how popular radio DJ Glen Lewis played a pivotal role in steering him away from rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.

Back in 2008, Nahayo, a Burundi international, had established himself as a formidable force during his four-year stint with Jomo Cosmos.

His impressive performances drew attention from South Africa’s “Big Three” clubs, with both Chiefs and Sundowns vying for his signature.

However, it was DJ Glen Lewis, known for his musical talents rather than football dealings, who unexpectedly intervened and orchestrated Nahayo’s move to Chiefs. 

Lewis, who was managing fellow player Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane at the time, connected with Nahayo through Letsholonyane and highlighted Chiefs’ interest in him.

“Yeye gave me the highlights of Chiefs’ interest and made me aware that Glen Lewis was going to call me,” Nahayo explained to KickOff.com. 

He then met with Lewis and Bobby Motaung, Chiefs’ football manager, at the Hilton Hotel.

Nahayo was impressed by Motaung’s approach, which prioritized his family’s well-being alongside the contractual details. 

“Bobby made me feel wanted because he even spoke about my family before the contract and flights back home,” Nahayo confirmed.

This personal touch, coupled with Chiefs’ prestigious reputation and state-of-the-art facilities at Naturena, ultimately swayed Nahayo’s decision. 

Despite Sundowns’ strong interest, he chose to join the Amakhosi, leaving Jomo Sono with little choice but to accept the transfer.
