Nandipha Magudumana’s brother was paid just R30,000 by Showmax
MultiChoice, the parent company of the streaming platform Showmax, recently found itself at the center of controversy after admitting to paying Nandipha Magudumana’s brother R30,000 for exclusive interviews.
This revelation came to light amidst a legal battle surrounding the documentary series “Tracking Thabo Bester”.
In a statement filed at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, MultiChoice’s general counsel, Steven Budlender, addressed allegations made by Thabo Bester, a central figure in the documentary.
Bester claimed that Showmax had paid a significant sum of “at least R300,000” to a “State witness” who he believed was influenced by a desire to exonerate his former girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana.
Contrary to Bester’s accusations, Budlender denied the claims of excessive payments to the said witness, emphasizing that the motivations behind the payments were not as alleged.
Bester had further elaborated on the witness’s supposed intentions, stating that they aimed to alter the narrative surrounding his sister by implicating him in a negative light.
“The motive of this witness was stated by him to or about the effect that, ‘I wanted to change the narrative as it concerns my sister to the extent that she was under the evil spell of Bester’,” Bester asserted.
The legal battle surrounding the documentary “Tracking Thabo Bester” continues to unfold, shedding light on the complexities and controversies that can arise in the realm of media production and storytelling.
