Durban mayor apologizes after he blasted Eastern Cape migrants
Ethekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has found himself in hot water after making controversial comments about residents from the Eastern Cape being responsible for the City’s budget shortfall.
However, in a turn of events, he has since issued an apology for his remarks.
According to mayoral spokesperson Mluleki Mntungwa, Mayor Kaunda was trying to illustrate the impact of rapid urbanisation on existing infrastructure when he made the comments.
Mntungwa stated, “While illustrating the point that rapid urbanisation puts pressure on existing infrastructure, mayor Kaunda highlighted that people come from other countries, provinces and municipalities to look for greener pastures in urban areas like Durban and Johannesburg.”
Realizing the insensitivity of his remarks, Mayor Kaunda has taken full responsibility and publicly apologized for the harm that his words may have caused.
Mntungwa further added, “The mayor wishes to emphasize that South Africa is a unitary state and people have a right to live and work anywhere in the country.”
It is important to remember that diversity is what makes South Africa a unique and vibrant nation.
People from all walks of life contribute to the growth and development of our cities, and it is essential to embrace this diversity rather than scapegoat certain groups for economic challenges.
