Kidnapper arrested in the act
One kidnapper has been apprehended in Verulam, KZN. The hunt for an abducted child is presently underway.
This is after a male visited Capitec Bank on Wick Street. He informed bank personnel that him and his child had been kidnapped. They were kept captive, the drama of the incident unfolded.
Officers from both sectors swarmed the scene and caught the Ford Ranger bakkie’s driver before he could flee. Officers learned that he lived in Inanda, KZN.
On his left arm, a brown leather belt with Muthi for protection was discovered.
According to the father of the child, he was unable to determine if the child was still at home or had been taken to the Verulam Cbd. When he entered the bank, he was visibly traumatized and suspected that the remaining suspects had evacuated the youngster from the area.
The area is being searched by Reaction Officers and the South African Police Service (SAPS) Officers.
Kidnapping statistics
According to Mail & Guardian Kidnapping showed the biggest increase of all categories of crime, with a 35.7% increase to 2 605 during the current reporting period compared to the previous. In the second quarter of 2021-22, from July to September, there had been 2 000 kidnappings. So far in the 2021-22 financial year, there have been 6 837 kidnappings.

The statistics are slightly more positive when it comes to the killing of children, with a 5.6% decline. A total of 352 children were killed between October and December 2021
But the number of attempted murders of children rose by 30% during the same period, 303 in the previous year to 394.
