Foreign national bust with loads of cash

Illicit cigarettes continue to be a major issue in South Africa, with many individuals attempting to smuggle them into the country for profit.

The recent arrest of a 39-year-old foreign national in Hoedspruit, Limpopo, highlights the ongoing battle against this illegal activity.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the spokesperson for the Limpopo police, provided details of the arrest, stating that the suspect was intercepted while driving a Toyota RAV4 loaded with illicit cigarettes.

The vehicle, which had a Mpumalanga province registration number, was spotted along the R71 heading to Hoedspruit.

Ledwaba commended the provincial visible task team for their swift response to the information received about the suspicious vehicle.

Upon searching the vehicle, police officers discovered 728 cartons of Remington Gold illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of almost R300,000.

In addition to the contraband, the driver was found in possession of a substantial amount of cash.

The suspect was promptly arrested and taken into custody.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal trade of cigarettes in South Africa.

The illicit cigarette trade not only poses a significant threat to public health but also results in substantial revenue losses for the government.
