Government ignored deadly warning
The recent floods in KwaZulu-Natal have left a trail of destruction, with many municipalities struggling to cover the costs of repairs.
The KwaZulu-Natal government is now calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare a state of disaster in the affected areas, in order to expedite the release of emergency funding.
According to Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi, the costs of the repairs have already exceeded billions, which the municipalities simply cannot afford.
In a joint statement with national and provincial Cogta, Sithole-Moloi emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the affected municipalities have already been classified as disaster areas.
The declaration of a state of disaster would not only bring attention to the dire situation in these areas, but it would also enable the release of emergency funding that is desperately needed for repairs.
This funding would help to rebuild infrastructure, provide relief to affected communities, and support the recovery efforts.
The devastating impact of the floods is evident in the widespread damage caused to homes, roads, and public facilities.
Many communities have been left without access to basic services such as clean water and electricity.
The declaration of a state of disaster would not only provide financial assistance, but it would also enable the mobilization of resources and support from various government departments and agencies.
The KwaZulu-Natal government is hopeful that President Ramaphosa will heed their call and declare a state of disaster in the affected areas.
