Visiting a prophet for New Year prayers proves fatal for mum and daughter
A decision by a mother and her daughter to consult a prophet for prayers massively backfired.
That is because the prophet turned out to be a bogus one.
“A 35-year-old self-proclaimed prophet has been apprehended for allegedly committing a heinous crime in Silver Oaks village,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.
“We received a distressing report of a murder near Willows Clinic on Saturday morning. Upon arrival, we discovered a 37-year-old woman with stab wounds on her neck.”
Before succumbing to her injuries, the woman purportedly confided in her sister about the perpetrator’s identity.
“She revealed that she and her daughter had been attacked by a man who claimed to be a prophet,” Mashaba explained.
Tragically, the woman’s 20-year-old daughter was discovered lifeless in the sitting room, partially unclothed, with evidence of both stabbing and sexual assault. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities also found the woman’s five-year-old brother bound with tape in his room. It appears that the woman had sought the services of the suspect due to his self-proclaimed prophetic abilities.
“The motive behind this gruesome act remains unknown at this stage. However, it is alleged that the 37-year-old woman had consulted the suspect in the past, as he presented himself as a prophet,” Mashaba stated.
Efforts to apprehend the suspect led the police to his girlfriend’s residence, but he was nowhere to be found. Eventually, he was apprehended while walking at a hitch-hiking spot. He was subsequently arrested and is currently being held at Hoedspruit police station.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court in the near future, where he will face charges of two counts of murder and rape.
