Mpumalanga police bust two truck hijackers

Mpumalanga police have bust two suspects in connection with a series of truck jacking incidents on the R40.

The alleged masterminds behind these crimes have been successfully traced by the police in Calcutta.

The duo has been charged with seven incidents of armed robberies and appeared in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The charges against the suspects relate to delivery truck hijackings that occurred between November and December.

These crimes have been a cause of great concern for the Mpumalanga South African Police Service (Saps).

The Provincial Commissioner of Saps in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela, expressed her excitement over this breakthrough.

She said, “We observe this development with great excitement because we have been so much concerned with the robberies that were previously committed whereby delivery vehicles were targeted by perpetrators and we hope more arrests will be made.”

The case has been postponed to 27 December for a formal bail application, and the suspects are currently in police custody.

The arrest of these two individuals is seen as a step in the right direction by the Saps, who commend the hard work of their members.

This is not the first orchestrated robbery involving trucks in the Mpumalanga area.

In August of this year, a truck driver and his accomplice were arrested in Bushbuckridge for allegedly planning and staging a hijacking and robbery.

The truck driver was supposed to deliver liquor worth R50,000 to Matibidi Trust when he was intercepted by two armed men. The truck was then taken to a bush in Xanthia Trust where the liquor was offloaded.

These arrests highlight the ongoing issue of truck hijackings and robberies in the area.

The police are making efforts to crack down on these crimes and apprehend the individuals responsible.
