2 women charged for robbing pensioner, set to appear in court
Two women from Durban, aged 39 and 47, are facing charges of theft after allegedly robbing a 75-year-old pensioner.
The women are accused of stealing clothing items, a cellphone, and cash.
They are expected to appear in Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon, according to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
The incident occurred on 8 November 2024, when the pensioner was at his home in Verulam.
The two women reportedly visited him, asking to see him, and he offered them tea. However, the women allegedly insisted on making him coffee instead.
After drinking the coffee, the pensioner reportedly felt sleepy and went to bed. When he woke up, he discovered that his belongings had been stolen. Police investigations led to the arrest of the two women.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) tracked down the suspects in the Chatsworth and Phoenix areas on Monday. RUSA’s Prem Balram explained that the women had been captured on CCTV footage on Friday, wearing masks.
“After keeping observation, a 39-year-old woman was arrested in Montford, Chatsworth,” Balram said. The second suspect, aged 47, was apprehended at a crèche in Sunford, Phoenix.
Balram added that one of the women claimed to have met the pensioner on Facebook. “She said she had befriended the pensioner on Facebook and had boarded an Uber to his home on Friday, expecting to be compensated for the visit.”
