22-year-old lady jumps from moving taxi to avoid getting raped conductor and taxi driver
A 22-year-old resident of Durban, KZN, suffered serious injuries after jumping from a moving taxi to escape an attempted rape. The victim arrived at Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) HQ with her family around 08:32 on Monday morning, using crutches due to difficulty walking.
According to the victim, who is a student at a college in the Ethekwini Municipality, she boarded a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi near her college on Saturday, April 20, 2024.
The taxi driver and conductor dropped off passengers while heading towards Durban Central Business District. After the last passenger exited the vehicle, the conductor demanded the victim hand over her cell phone, backpack, and cash.
Despite trying to defend herself, the victim was overpowered and forced to the floor of the minibus. The conductor attempted to remove her underwear and penetrate her, but was unsuccessful.
The victim managed to kick a window on the sliding door and broke free, jumping from the moving vehicle. The taxi continued without stopping.
A bystander assisted the student and contacted the South African Police Service (SAPS). She was then transported to the hospital for her injuries, which included bruising to her legs, head, and back. She has experienced difficulty walking since the incident.
