Zwane admits his concern about chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach Arthur Zwane acknowledged that the team has been putting in work on the practice field to prevent them from giving up early goals regularly.

Gabadinho Mhango’s 14th-minute goal in their first leg MTN8 semi-final on Sunday afternoon, Chiefs have given up in the first 15 minutes of six of their nine games played this season.

Zwane acknowledges he’s starting to sound like a stuck record after games, even though they came back to draw at FNB in front of their home crowd in three weeks.

He was irritated by their lack of control against Brandon Truter’s team after spending the previous several training sessions trying to stop the shaky starts to games and instead capitalize on them.

In the press conference following the game, Zwane said, “We started very slowly, very slowly. We gave them time and space on the ball with their build-up, and from those build-ups, you could see it was a warning, they had about two chances that they could have capitalized on before they scored the goal.

“After admitting it was a wake-up call once more, which is troubling from our perspective because it’s something we’ve been working on to start on a good note, you know from our side.

“After we gave up, we showed some aggression and generated a few chances, but we couldn’t take advantage of them. In the second half, we came back stronger, but once again, we weren’t clinical enough to make things simple for us heading into the second round.”

As they square off in their DStv Premiership match in Dobsonville on Wednesday at 19:30, Chiefs will now switch their focus to rival Soweto team Swallows.
