South African designer showcases 'Traditional Elegance' collection featuring East London's Xhosa fabrics
Renowned South African fashion label, Zazi Fashion, is set to make its mark at New York Fashion Week’s Runway 7 collection at Sony Hall in New York City.
Founder and creative director Onwaba Mleve, hailing from East London, brings her vibrant ‘Traditional Elegance’ collection to the international stage, featuring traditional mbaco Xhosa fabrics sourced locally.
“Our African colour collection is a proud Mahikeng presentation called ‘Traditional Elegance’ and features traditional mbaco Xhosa fabrics sourced from East London in lots of bright, vibrant colours and African prints.” — Onwaba Mleve, owner of Zazi Fashion
Mleve, arriving in New York with seven giant suitcases filled with garments, expressed her excitement despite the chilly weather.
The ‘Traditional Elegance’ collection is a celebration of African culture, showcasing bright, vibrant colours and intricate African prints.
With a lineup of 10 models, including three South African talents, Zazi Fashion promises a unique blend of red carpet glamour and traditional African elegance.
Reflecting on her journey from the corporate world to the world of design, Mleve shared,
“The design part of my business is a gift, and that’s how I got the name ‘Zazi’, which in Zulu means recognition, confidence, and wisdom.”
Her dream-inspired designs and commitment to supporting local and sustainable enterprises have propelled Zazi Fashion to international recognition.
Initially skeptical when approached via Instagram about joining New York Fashion Week, Mleve requested a formal invitation before realizing the opportunity’s authenticity. Grateful for the support and sponsorship that made her debut possible, Mleve acknowledges her team’s hard work and the collaborative effort that brings her dreams to reality.
