Veteran actor knew his killers
The community of Nyanga is in mourning following the tragic death of veteran actor Chris April, who passed away on March 31 after being brutally beaten by robbers in his own home.
The Sowetan reports that the 84-year-old actor had been in and out of hospital since the attack, which occurred two months prior when intruders broke into his Lindela Road residence in Mau-Mau.
According to family spokesperson Johnson Puza, the incident took place in the early hours of the morning while April was sleeping during a period of load shedding.
The thieves not only stole his belongings but also subjected him to a vicious assault before fleeing the scene.
Despite efforts from concerned neighbors who heard his dogs barking and rushed to his aid, April suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital.
Since then, the beloved actor had been battling with his health, undergoing multiple hospital visits until his untimely passing in Lentegeur District Hospital.
The heartbreaking news has sent shockwaves through the community, as April was not only known for his acting talent but also for his kindness and generosity towards those around him.
During April’s memorial service at the Zolani Centre in Nyanga, neighbour Malibongwe Sophangisa shared details about the recovery of some of the stolen items.
Law enforcement officers discovered two individuals walking with a wheelie bin containing the stolen goods, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
It was revealed that one of the perpetrators was a neighbour of April, whom he had trusted enough to send on errands to the shops.
