Tshwane Derby fails to live up to Soweto Derby fireworks as it sends fans yawning to bed from boredom

In a tightly contested but dead boring Tshwane derby, Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their dominance in the DStv Premiership with a 1-1 draw against city rivals SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday night.

The result sees Sundowns extend their lead at the top of the table to 13 points, accumulating 46 points from 18 matches and continuing their impressive unbeaten league run to 42 games, positioning themselves as strong contenders for a record-extending seventh consecutive league title.

Despite the stalemate, Sundowns’ advantage is further emphasized by their two games in hand over second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have struggled for consistency this season, leaving their title ambitions in doubt.

SuperSport United, on the other hand, climbed to third place but sit level on points with Pirates, separated only by goal difference.

Looking ahead, both teams shift their focus to the Nedbank Cup fixtures this weekend, with SuperSport United set to face Richards Bay at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, while Mamelodi Sundowns will host Maritzburg United at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

The match saw Teboho Mokoena open the scoring for Sundowns with a stunning long-range effort, only for Bradley Grobler to equalize for SuperSport United shortly after.

Grobler’s goal takes his tally to eight in the DStv Premiership, trailing the league’s leading scorers Khanyisa Mayo of Cape Town City and Lucas Ribeiro of Sundowns with nine and ten goals respectively.
