Traffic officer arrested for lies
Mariannhill police arrested a 46-year-old man on Friday. Regarding perjury and defeating the ends of justice. He reported a false case on 8 June 2022.
The officer reported that three unknown men approach him. The men demanded his service pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition.
An investigating officer investigated the matter further. The man’s statement had contradictions. He was re-interviewed. He had reported a false case.
The false statement is a criminal offence. The investigating officer established that he had lost his firearm. He did not report the matter to his employer. He was arrested. The man will appear in Pinetown Magistrate’s Court. The court appearance is on Monday.
Community members must refrain from opening false cases. It is a criminal offence to lie under oath. Those who do so will face the law.
