Three hijacking suspects killed in Umlazi shootout with police

In a dramatic confrontation, three hijacking suspects were killed in a gun battle with police and security teams in Umlazi, south of Durban. The incident unfolded on Friday, following the hijacking of a Hyundai i10 in Umlazi’s R-Section.

The incident began when the suspects forcibly removed the vehicle’s driver, a woman, and sped off in the stolen car.The victim was left unharmed but shaken after being thrown out of the car.

The hijacked vehicle was quickly spotted, prompting a rapid response from multiple law enforcement and security units.

Members from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Umlazi detective branch, Umlazi Vispol, Fidelity SIU, ATS Security, and Mshazi Security engaged in a high-speed pursuit of the stolen Hyundai i10. The chase intensified as the suspects attempted to evade capture, leading to a tense standoff.

As the pursuit continued, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the pursuing officers. The police and security teams returned fire, resulting in a deadly exchange of gunfire.

In the ensuing shootout, all three suspects were fatally wounded. The scene of the confrontation was secured, and three firearms were recovered from the suspects.

A police officer was injured during the shootout and was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The officer’s condition is reported to be stable.

As investigations continue, authorities urge anyone with additional information regarding the incident to come forward to assist in the inquiry. The police remain committed to maintaining public safety and bringing those involved in criminal activities to justice.
