3 Suspects involved in a car theft ring arrested

Police, along with their E2 security partners, uncovered a car theft ring in Centurion on Wednesday, April 24.

Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk stated that officers from the unit recognized a vehicle previously connected to a car theft ring in Lyttelton. Van Dyk noted that Lyttelton police and E2 members had intelligence indicating the vehicle was spotted on John Voster Drive.

Law enforcement quickly located the vehicle and instructed the driver to pull over for questioning.

“During an inspection, it was established the vehicle was fitted with false plates,” he said.

The three occupants of the vehicle were apprehended and transported to the Lyttelton police station for additional questioning and verification of the vehicle’s status, according to the spokesperson.

“It was discovered that the same vehicle had been involved in an attempted theft of a motor vehicle and pointing of a firearm earlier in the day,” he said.

Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk stated that the information was cross-referenced with the Boschkop police station, confirming the vehicle was stolen in Brooklyn back in January.

The suspects are now facing charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and car-breaking implements.

Van Dyk added that an investigation into attempted theft, pointing of a firearm, as well as hijacking and kidnapping in Boschkop, would aim to connect the cases.

“The units involved in the operation include Lyttelton police, police highway patrol, police diplomatic unit, Tshwane metro police K9, Tracking Company, Noordvaal, Scorpion, Vision Tactical, and Tracker SA,” he said.
