Suspected wife killer contemplates taking his own life in prison
Suspected wife killer Werner de Jager has reportedly discussed plans to take his own life while being held behind bars.
The 45-year-old is currently on trial for the murder of his 38-year-old wife, Liezel, at their Amanzimtoti home in Durban in October 2021.
The revelations came to light during a hearing at the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court, leaving the courtroom in a state of disbelief.
The alleged suicide plans have raised a number of questions about the mental state of the accused and the adequacy of the prison system in dealing with individuals who may be at risk.
It is not uncommon for individuals facing serious charges to experience extreme emotional distress, but the responsibility lies on the justice system to ensure their safety and well-being while in custody.
The case itself is a tragic one, with Liezel de Jager losing her life in what appears to be a domestic dispute.
The details surrounding her death are still emerging, but it is clear that her husband is the primary suspect.
