Sundowns reclaim top spot with win over Royal AM

Mamelodi Sundowns made their way back to the top of the Betway Premiership with a 2-1 victory over Royal AM at Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane on Wednesday evening.

This win marked Sundowns’ seventh consecutive victory across all competitions, sending a strong message to their rivals that they are determined to defend their title.

Goals from Sphelele Mkhulise and Khuliso Mudau secured the win, while Sbangani Zulu scored for Royal AM.

Sundowns made eight changes from their previous match after a heavy defeat to Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout Cup.

Notable players Teboho Mokoena and Mudau returned to the starting line-up after limited game time this season.

For Royal AM, chairman Andile Mpisane started on the bench as they made nine changes from their weekend match against Cape Town City.

Sundowns quickly took the lead in the fifth minute when Mkhulise capitalised on a mistake from a Royal AM defender.

Despite the early goal, Sundowns struggled to create further chances without the injured Themba Zwane in midfield, as Royal AM maintained a solid defensive shape.

Royal AM had a chance to equalise just before halftime, but Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams comfortably saved a rushed shot from Sera Motebang.

In the second half, opportunities were scarce for Sundowns. Lucas Ribeiro nearly doubled their lead in the 75th minute, but his effort was blocked by Thabo Matlaba.

Sundowns eventually made it 2-0 when Ribeiro set up Peter Shalulile, whose shot was blocked, allowing Mudau to score from the rebound.

Zulu netted a consolation goal for Royal AM in stoppage time, but Sundowns held on to win 2-1.

At the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Stellenbosch FC climbed to fourth place after a 2-0 victory over Chippa United, with goals from Ashley Cupido and Devin Titus.

They will look to maintain momentum against Richards Bay on Saturday, while Chippa United aims to bounce back against Golden Arrows.
