The transfer, valued at $2.5 million (R46.7 million), adds yet another talented South American player to the Bafana Ba Style roster

This follows the successful recruitment of Marcello Allende from Montevideo City Torque in August 2022.

Agreement and Expectations

Esquivel, who had previously agreed to personal terms with Sundowns last month.

He first garnered attention in his homeland for his outstanding performances during Lanús recent campaign in the Primera División.

The team  would go on to secure a fourth-place finish in the 28-team division.

The move to The Brazillians has taken the local football community by surprise.

Many anticipated a potential European transfer for the highly-rated Argentine midfielder.

The negotiation process between Sundowns and Lanús concluded early last week, paving the way for Esquivel’s transition to the reigning champions.

The deal is expected to be officially confirmed, and the player is likely to join Sundowns for their mid-season pre-season preparations during the Africa Cup of Nations.

Sundowns South American Connection

Esquivel’s arrival follows the successful integration of Marcello Allende into the Sundowns squad.

The Chilean international made an instant impact after his $3 million transfer from Montevideo City Torque.

Allende’s contribution has resonated well with the Sundowns faithful, making him a key figure in the team.

Masandawana are set to part ways with Erwin Saavedra, and Divine Lunga will be registered as a South African player, securing a spot in the  first-team.

Lunga, who spent the last six months training with the squad, was initially unregistered due to the club’s foreign quota limitations.

This included Allende, Ribeiro Costa, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Júnior Mendieta, and Abubeker Nasir.

The addition of Esquivel necessitates strategic decisions regarding the club’s foreign player quota.

It remains to be seen who will be sacrificed to accommodate the Argentine midfielder in the roster.

Mendieta and Nasir, both dealing with injuries, may be candidates for reconsideration, as their contributions to Rulani Mokwena’s starting XI have been limited.
