Stellenbosch University expelled white student who urinated on black student’s desk
Theuns du Toit, a 19-year-old white student at Stellenbosch University (SU), has been expelled with immediate effect. This is after he urinated on a black student’s desk and bragged about it.
According to the information given by the university on Thursday. It is said that Du Toit’s disciplinary procedure following the incident at Huis Marais on 15 May was completed on June 23. It also stated that the university’s independent central disciplinary committee (CDC) found Du Toit in violation of several provisions of the school’s student conduct code.
A student “must not act in a manner that is racist, unfairly discriminatory, violent, extremely disrespectful, abusive, or intimidating toward any other person.” This is according to one of the provisions.
The provision in the conduct also includes, but is not limited to, acts that violate another person’s dignity, cause physical or mental harm or are designed to degrade them.
The CDC concluded and said that Mr. Du Toit had to be dismissed with immediate effect. The dismissal is in light of the facts mentioned above.
The university also stated that Mr. Du Toit has five working days to file a notice of appeal against the CDC’s finding and/or sanction after receiving the grounds for the CDC’s decision.
According to Prof. Deresh Ramjugernath, SU’s deputy vice chancellor for learning and teaching, the CDC handles disciplinary cases and issues with punishments independently of the administration of the university.
Ramjugernath claimed that all legal procedures, including thorough investigations, had been followed.
The University of Stellenbosch took this matter seriously. This was demonstrated, among other things, by the initial interim suspension of Mr. Du Toit and the appointment of Justice Sisi Khampepe as the chair of an independent committee to investigate allegations of racism at SU, according to Ramjugernath.
