Stellenbosch FC outclass Chippa, rise to 3rd place
Stellenbosch FC defeated Chippa United 2-0 in a Betway Premiership match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Goals from Ashley Cupido and Devon Titus in the first half gave Stellenbosch their second league win of the season, moving them up to third place, five points behind the joint leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
Chippa United’s second loss of the season dropped them to sixth place.
They are tied on seven points with Stellenbosch, Sekhukhune United, and Polokwane City, but have played more games and have the worst goal difference (-1) among them.
Stellenbosch started the match strongly, creating a chance for Cupido in the fourth minute, but Chippa’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, made a brave save.
The visitors had more chances with Titus and Fawaaz Basadien but failed to score, while Chippa had a near miss with a header from Thabang Moloa just before the half-hour mark.
In the 31st minute, Stellenbosch took the lead when Titus crossed the ball to Cupido, who finished easily from close range for his first goal of the season.
Twelve minutes later, they made it 2-0 when Sanele Barns set up Titus on a counter-attack, and he confidently scored in the corner of the net.
Chippa made three substitutions at half-time, bringing on Aphelele Teto, Siphelo Baloni, and Malebogo Modise.
They almost scored in the 51st minute when Teto crossed for Bienvenu Eva Nga, but he missed the target under pressure.
Chippa had more chances late in the game, with Modise forcing a good save from Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens from a free kick in the 81st minute.
Two minutes later, Teto found Elmo Kambindu with another cross, but he headed wide, missing a final chance to get Chippa back in the game.
Both teams will return to the Betway Premiership on Saturday, 26 October, with Stellenbosch facing Richards Bay and Chippa United playing against Golden Arrows.
Final Score: Chippa United 0, Stellenbosch FC 2 (Cupido 31’, Titus 43’)
