Prison escapee evades police for just three hours

An inmate has been rearrested by Gqeberha police after he had initially escaped from Motherwell police holding cells. Siboniso Mdende, a 32-year-old man who was detained on a charge of burglary, managed to flee on Monday. His freedom was short-lived as he was apprehended three hours later.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, Mdende’s escape is currently under investigation. The circumstances surrounding his escape remain unclear.

Naidu stated, “The suspect was detained on a charge of residential burglary.”

It is yet to be determined how he was able to break free from custody.

As soon as the escape was discovered, a manhunt was launched to track down the fugitive.

The efforts of the police paid off three hours later, as Mdende was found in NU13 in Motherwell.

Naidu confirmed that a case of escaping from lawful custody has been opened for investigation.

She also mentioned that an internal investigation will be conducted alongside the criminal case.

Escapes from police custody are not uncommon, but they pose a significant risk to public safety.

While the details of the escape remain undisclosed, it is essential for the police to reassess their protocols and procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Police investigations are still ongoing.
