Police officer killed in the line of duty

Crime scene investigators and experts gathered evidence at the crime scene in Grassy Park where a 26-year-old police officer was shot and killed at approximately 5:45 pm on the afternoon of 1 December 2022.

The deceased police officer and his partner responded to information of an armed robbery taking place on Blackbird Avenue in Grassy Park. Sadly during an altercation with the suspect, the police officer suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest, while his partner escaped the gunfire incident unscathed. The suspect fled the crime scene.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) investigators led the investigation into the circumstances of the case.

Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, strengthened police operations in the area by deploying additional resources to track down the suspect so that justice can be served. The effective and rapid deployment of resources to track down the suspect who shot and killed a Grassy Park officer in cold blood brought members of the anti-gang unit to Ravensmead, where a 42-year-old man was found in his hiding place and arrested.

The 9mm pistol that he stole during the altercation with the South African Police Service(SAPS) members was found in his possession and confiscated.

The circumstances of the incident are still being investigated by Hawks detectives, while the suspect’s court appearance is scheduled for Monday in Wynberg.
