Police arrest a gang of vehicle theft syndicate suspects

On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, three men aged between 35 and 42, suspected of being part of a vehicle theft syndicate, were arrested in Roodepoort. This operation involved a coordinated effort between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and private security companies.

The arrests followed intelligence reports indicating that the suspects, who were using an Audi A3 sedan, were targeting high-end vehicles and SUVs across Gauteng Province. The team, which included SAPS Crime Intelligence, the Gauteng Tactical Response Team, SAPS Honeydew, the Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect, acted on this information and located the suspects’ vehicle in Little Falls, Roodepoort.

The vehicle, which had false registration plates, was intercepted, and upon searching, officers discovered two military-grade jammers, various electronic devices used in vehicle theft, and multiple false registration plates.

The suspects were linked to several vehicle theft cases in the region. Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni praised the team for their effective work, stating that the arrests would likely reduce vehicle theft incidents in Gauteng. The Audi A3 used by the suspects was seized, and the three individuals are expected to appear in Roodepoort Magistrates Court soon.
