Pensioners chase down and arrest post office robbers
Three armed men allegedly broke into a Post Office in Lamontville yesterday at 10:00 and held the staff at gunpoint in full view of pensioners.
About 200 senior citizens were calmly waiting for their pension payments when the gunmen entered and grabbed the staff. They held the manager and employees at gunpoint, forcing them to unlock the safe, from which they grabbed two bags of cash.
A group of brave pensioners got up and chased the culprits, capturing one of them in the process. Unfortunately, the one with the money and a gun managed to get away into the bushes. There were no reported injuries and thankfully no gunshots were fired.
The suspects, who are 26 and 28 years old, were taken into custody and will appear in court tomorrow in Durban on charges of business robbery.
