One extortionist killed in shootout with police, two others injured

The police in Mpumalanga recently carried out a big operation in response to reports of serious criminal activities, including extortion and attempted murder.

Acting on intelligence, officers targeted a group of suspects in Kwagga A, Kwaggafontein, around 04:00 on Monday, 02 September 2024.

When the police arrived, the suspects fired at the officers, who responded in self-defense. The exchange resulted in one suspect being fatally wounded and two others being injured and arrested. The injured suspects are currently under police guard in hospital. No police officers were harmed during the operation.

A fourth suspect managed to escape and may have been injured. The poloce urge the public, especially medical staff, to report anyone with gunshot wounds or injuries consistent with a recent violent encounter.

A 72-hour plan has been activated to locate the remaining suspect. The police remain dedicated to ensuring community safety and security.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has sent a stern warning to those who are contemplating to perpetuate crime in the province. “We will not tolerate any acts of violence or intimidation, and we will vigorously pursue those who threaten the well-being of our citizens. We encourage community members to come forward with any information that could assist in apprehending the suspect on the run. We thank our officers for their bravery and commitment to upholding the law. Together, we can ensure that our communities remain safe and secure, ” said the General.
