Nomava arrest by the Hawks after she reported for duty

Nomava Luwalala who is a 44-year-old cashier in the municipality of Emthanjeni has briefly appeared in Hannover District Court.

She appeared in court on Thursday, the 1st of December 2022 and was subsequently charged with 20 counts of fraud.

Nomava was arrested by Hawk’s Serious Corruption Investigation this on Friday morning of 2 December 2022, as she reported for wor at local offices in the Borough of Hannover.

It is alleged that the Nomava manipulated the eNatis system over a period from July 2019 to December 2020 and failed to report all funds received while she performed her duties. As a result, the municipality suffered a loss of R120,252.

The accused was taken to court immediately after her arrest. This was for her first appearance in Hannover District Court and was granted bail of R1000-00. The case was postponed to the 20th of March 2023 to be transferred to the Reginal Court.

The Hawks are the South African Police Service’s directorate for priority crime investigations, targeting organized crime, white collar crime, corruption and other serious crimes referred to them by the President or any other department of the South African Police Authority

Due to greed, people do not realise the impact stealing from the government has on the lives of the poor and needy, as well as South Africans in general. When a person steals government money, he deprives the government of its ability to provide services, build infrastructure, create jobs, and generally social and economic development.

Money is stolen through fraud and corruption is detrimental to social and economic development. It is high time that people who commit such crimes are severely punished. Such punishment will serve as a warning to others from committing similar crimes
