Nigerian man arrested by SA and USA officials in Sandton
A 28-year-old Nigerian man who is thought to be part of a cybercrime group has been arrested. The arrest was made by Interpol South Africa. The group does phishing, internet fraud, and money laundering.
After the operation, Mr. James Junior Aliyu was arrested at a high-class estate in Sandton, Johannesburg. This is where his arrest was made earlier this week.
On 29 June 2022, just after 10:00 a.m., people of the Interpol National Crime Bureau (NCB) in Pretoria, assisted by officers from the SAPS Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit, came into the estate and made the arrest.
The arrested was made after an investigation made by law officials from South Africa (SA) and the United States of America (USA).
The Nigerian suspect, who worked from South Africa, is suspected of stealing from many US residents. The he millions of dollars using email and text messages.
Officials in the USA, where most of his alleged victims are based and where the inquiry began, have asked for him to be handed over to them.
The suspect went to court the same day he was arrested. He was at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court, and the case will continue on 5 July 2022.
Another suspect arrested
Meanwhile, one of three suspects arrested on Thursday, 30 June 2022 has been recognised as a suspect wanted for murder.
The man at Verulam SAPS has been pointed out by Police Detectives. He was a wanted suspect in a murder case. The killing happened on the night of 16 May 2022 when one person was killed during a fight. Police want a seven-day remand at the Verulam Magistrates Court for more investigation.
Reaction Officers arrested the man at 10:47 on Thursday during a planned operation and he was thought to be very dangerous after he and his gang stabbed multiple people in the Verulam CBD in January 2022.
Investigations are ongoing.
