Moroka Swallows Fined R1 Million For Match Cancellations
Moroka Swallows Football Club finds itself in hot water after Premier Soccer League (PSL) lawyer Zola Mojavu insisted the club was guilty of allegations of misconduct.
The charges stem from the club’s failure to honor matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows in December due to the Moroka Swallows players striking.
Their actions are characterized by harsh penalties and opponents were given walkovers.
In a recent update Mojavu stated:
“I can confirm that earlier this evening Moroka Swallows Football Club appeared before the PSL DC to answer to charges of misconduct, on account of their non-fulfilment of the fixtures.”
The club pleaded guilty, leading to their conviction by the league.
The guilty plea, however, was considered a sign of remorse by the disciplinary committee.
PSL DC strictly banned Moroka Swallows for each contest interrupted, opponents were given a walkout, averaging three points and three goals per game.
Moroka Swallows fine and aftermath
Additionally, a hefty penalty of R1 million was imposed on the team and R 6,00,000 was suspended for 24 months with the condition that no further violations will be given during this period
The club is now obligated to pay the remaining R400,000, with the DC also ordering the club to cover the costs of administrative proceedings related to the seating.
The total amount to be paid will include both the fine and additional administrative costs.
While cautioning Moroka Swallows about the potential consequences of future offenses, the DC acknowledged the club’s guilty plea at the earliest opportunity.
The disciplinary committee accepted the club’s assurance that they have implemented measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents that could tarnish the league’s reputation.
