Martin Jackson who escaped from Boksburg prison rearrested

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has rearrested Martin Jackson, the inmate who escaped from the Boksburg Correctional Facility on Wednesday.

This was confirmed by DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

“The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirms that Martin Jackson has been successfully apprehended and returned to custody. This quick arrest shows the department’s commitment to making sure all inmates serve their sentences as ordered by the courts,” said Nxumalo.

He added that the department is looking into the circumstances that led to Jackson’s escape.

Inmate faces escape charges, investigation underway

Nxumalo explained that Jackson will now face extra criminal charges related to his escape.

“The DCS is conducting a full investigation to understand how the escape happened and to prevent future incidents. The inmate will face additional charges linked to the escape,” Nxumalo said.

Earlier on Thursday, Nxumalo confirmed that Jackson had broken out of the Boksburg Correctional Centre in Ekurhuleni on Wednesday morning.

It is understood that the escape happened while prison staff were at a celebration party marking the appointment of a new area commissioner inside the facility.

“The escape took place on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” said Nxumalo. “Correctional services is working with other law enforcement agencies to find and arrest the escapee.”

Admitted into the system in 2015

According to Nxumalo, Jackson was admitted to the DCS system on April 10, 2015.

At the time of his escape, Jackson was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery, theft, and possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The escape comes while police and the DCS are still trying to capture another escapee. Earlier this year, a convicted kidnapper and rapist managed to escape while seeing a dietician at the Mamelodi Regional Hospital.

Nxumalo had said that before leaving the hospital, Clatta Gumbo attacked and disarmed a security guard.

Gumbo had been incarcerated at the Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre in Tshwane, serving a life sentence for rape, kidnapping, and assault.
