Man who was beating up his wife kills cop who tried to intervene
A 44-year-old on-duty police sergeant lost his life in a fatal shooting in Mamre on Wednesday.
The Herald reports that the sergeant and his partner were responding to a domestic violence complaint at Klapmuts Street around 12:45 pm when the harrowing incident took place.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa, the suspect engaged in a scuffle with the sergeant upon their arrival at the scene, managing to seize the service pistol of the deceased police official before fatally shooting him.
The suspect then turned the weapon on the sergeant’s partner before fleeing the scene, leaving the partner unharmed but deeply shaken by the traumatic experience.
Reflecting on the tragic loss of the police sergeant, Western Cape police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile expressed profound dismay at the senseless act of violence.
Lt-Gen Patekile emphasized the critical role of law enforcement officers in protecting community members and maintaining public safety, stating, “It is disheartening that a police official responding to a complaint is shot with his own service pistol. Police are there to protect community members. They should not come under attack.”
