Magesi FC set sights on cup glory in their first PSL season

Magesi FC goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze is determined to help his team reach a cup final in their maiden season in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The former Zimbabwe national team player says the club’s aim is to make the province of Limpopo proud and repay the “love” they’ve received since joining the league.

Speaking ahead of their Carling KnockOut Cup semi-final against Richards Bay this Saturday, Chipezeze said:

“We know that we are on the verge of making history and we just want to make our province Limpopo proud. We want to make sure that we put a smile on the faces of the people who believe in us.”

Reaching the final would be a dream come true for Magesi, especially in their first-ever Premiership season.

Chipezeze added:

“It will be a dream – in our first season in the Premiership and participating in the Carling KnockOut for the first time – to reach the final. We’ve got history in the making and we will go there and see how it (the match) pans out.”

Despite the excitement of the moment, Chipezeze knows the key to success is staying grounded and enjoying the experience. “We have to enjoy the moment. Don’t be arrogant, be humble and take each game as it comes. It would be a nice feeling to be part of another final,” he said. Chipezeze previously reached the Nedbank Cup final with Baroka FC, another Limpopo-based club.

“We can’t say we are going to play a final because there’s still a semifinal,” he continued. “So we are just going to be humble and take it match by match.”

He also acknowledged the risk of becoming complacent after their win against cup specialists Orlando Pirates. “Football does not work like that, it is 11v11.

You might beat Pirates and then go out there and be beaten by another team,” he warned. “But yes, that win was a confidence booster for the boys because we went and got a positive result away at Pirates, and we want to continue doing the same.

But it’s one game at a time and we are going to be humble. You can’t win without working hard.”

Looking ahead to their next challenge against Richards Bay, Chipezeze respects their opponents’ experience in the league.

“They’ve been in the league for a while now, they know how to compete, and they have quality players. For us, it is history to be where we are today, and we are just going to take this moment and enjoy it. As the new babies in the league – we are the underdogs, but we are here to compete and try to give our best performance.”

As for the upcoming match, Chipezeze is hopeful of securing a win in the allotted 90 minutes, though he acknowledges that cup football is unpredictable.

“Of course, that’s the plan,” he said. “But cup games are unpredictable, anything can happen. Yes, we want to wrap it up in 90, but if extra time comes and penalties come, we are just going to have to take it.”
